70-year-old Queensland man survives Nepal earthquake

A 70-year-old mountain climber who was at Everest base camp when the Nepal earthquake struck has just returned home.

Queenslander Ron Nissen has to be one of the luckiest survivors of the disaster.

He'd just returned from an attempt on the summit when the quake triggered a deadly avalanche.

With nowhere to hide and no protection, Ron threw himself to the ground as blocks of ice and snow flew past just inches above his head.

While he had a lucky escape, tragedy did strike one of his expedition group members.

Ron joins RN Breakfast from his home at Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast.
