Hitting Home: Sarah Ferguson heads to the frontline of family violence

This year has brought an unprecedented level of focus on the incidence and impact of domestic and family violence.

The shame is that it has taken too long to get this focus.

Just consider these statistics: police deal with 650 domestic incidents every single day. That's one every two minutes. And most shocking of all, this year two women have been killed almost every week at the hands of a current or former partner.

The issue of domestic violence is examined in a two-part documentary series, Hitting Home, starting tonight on ABC TV at 8:30pm.

It's the result of a six month investigation by ABC journalist Sarah Ferguson.

Sarah Ferguson joins Fran Kelly in the RN Breakfast studio.

If you're in an abusive situation or you know someone who is, call 1800 RESPECT.

If it's an emergency, call 000, or you can also call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

And you can hear Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition leader Bill Shorten dicussing tomorrow's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on RN Breakfast's political update later in the program.
