Robert Wainwright

Robert returns to tell the remarkable story of George Ingle Finch, Australian-born mountaineer, and brilliant chemist.

George Finch was, in his day, one of the most famous men in the world.

Considered a maverick by the climbing establishment, in 1922 George climbed to the highest point of Mt Everest (with George Mallory), a feat which wasn't bettered for thirty years.

He invented the puffer jacket and pioneered the use of oxygen in climbing.

George's first wife had an affair while he was at the front in World War I and she gave birth to a boy called Peter.

George raised Peter as his own son. Later the boy would go on to become Academy-Award winning actor Peter Finch.
