Indigenous leaders lament crisis in Indigenous policy and still dire conditions

There is an increasingly impassioned plea from Australian Indigenous leaders lamenting a crisis in Indigenous policy, a lack of political leadership, and the still dire conditions for many First Australians across many measures.

Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will tell you their lives are still marked by too many funerals.

That's the state of affairs ten years after the campaign to Close the Gap was launched.

Today, with the launch of the annual progress report, there is mixed news.

Health and life expectancy gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people remain 'unacceptably' high.

On the other hand, targets on child mortality and Year 12 attainment rates are tracking well.

Last night in Canberra at a gathering with Indigenous entrepreneurs, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull urged a greater focus on Indigenous success.

This morning, these issues are front and centre for Indigenous leaders attending a Parliamentary breakfast.

Dr Jackie Huggins, co-chair of the Close the Gap campaign, joins Fran Kelly on RN Breakfast.
