Hottest 100 in Numbers

The Wrap Up

  • Swatting the swarm

#1 song ‘Hoops’ was a monster for The Rubens: not only did it slay the competition, it gobbled up votes for the band’s other eligible songs, which all placed outside the top 100. It’s a feat that lands them in exclusive company – Augie March (2006) and Denis Leary (1993) are their only predecessors to hit #1 with no other songs in the preceding 99 – and it flies in the face of the statistical “Swarm Theory”, which tells us that bands with multiple songs in the countdown are more likely to take the top spot.

  • Altitude sickness

Without making a mountain out of a molehill, it’s fair to say 2015 was a peak year for a certain ecological feature we all knoll and love. We’re not bluffing – this year was basically a summit on the humble mountain, with Foals’ ‘Mountain At My Gates’ (#20) and The Weeknd’s ‘The Hills’ (#19) both being elevated to the countdown, along with tunes from Vallis Alps (‘Young’, #27) and Alpine (‘Foolish’, #57). No ifs or buttes about it: we love mountains – and we don’t mean plateau-nically.

  • Where we’re going we don’t need odes

2015 may have been the year Marty McFly crashed a Delorean into in Back To The Future II, but the rappers of this year’s Hottest 100 dished up precisely zero lines about sports almanacs, hoverboards or Biff’s horrible sons. Instead, they repped some artists who’d have been at home in Marty’s fictional tape deck: A$AP Rocky sampled Rod Stewart (‘Everyday’, #80), Macklemore recruited Kool Moe Dee (‘Downtown’, #18) and Kendrick took inspiration from George Clinton (‘King Kunta’, #2 & ‘Alright’, #37).

  • Home grown heavy hitters

Hail to the champs: in 2015 the two artists who swung for the fences, who hit ‘em for six, who punched above their weight and lapped their opponents with a golden point in extra time and a hole in one were a pair of deadset Aussie legends. Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala conquered the world in 2015 with a stellar album apiece, and were rewarded with four songs each in the countdown. That makes both of these local heroes the most prolific acts in a countdown with one of the biggest artist spreads ever.

  • Lyrical miracles

triple j’s a modern workplace, so we’re not too fussed about your words-per-minute. But if we were looking at assembling a typing pool, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis would be a shoo-in for the job, with 632 unique lyrics in ‘Downtown’ (#18). Kendrick Lamar and Courtney Barnett would also be strong contenders (553 and 299 for ‘King Kunta’ and ‘Elevator Operator’, respectively). Not even slightly in contention would be Hayden James, with a meagre 47 unique lyrics in his song ‘Something About You’, and Ratatat who scored donuts in ‘Cream On Chrome’.

  • You used to call me on my cell phone

Future meme historians may well remember 2015 for one thing only: swishy-eyelash’d Canadian cherub Drake’s song ‘Hotline Bling’ (#14). But musically, Drizzy seemed to be the only one having trouble getting old “collaborators” on the phone. A wealth of his fellow musicians hooked up with old partners to great results, like The Chemical Brothers & Q-Tip (2004’s #65 ‘Galvanize’ & 2015’s #46 ‘Go’), Disclosure & Sam Smith (2012’s #21 ‘Latch’ & 2015’s #62 ‘Omen’) and Peking Duk & SAFIA (2014’s #5 ‘Take Me Over’ & 2015’s #30, ‘Say My Name’).
