Thailand road toll for holiday period rises to 442
Thailand has ended its biggest holiday period with more than 400 deaths on the road.
The New Year holiday of Songkran is typically a time of carnage on Thailand's roads, but this year's toll is worse than last.
There were 442 deaths during what Thais call the "seven dangerous days" surrounding the official holiday.
Most of the accidents involved motorcycles, with speed and alcohol the main causes.
Local media is reporting this year's death toll as a new record for the holiday period.
The toll comes despite a huge police presence and a new policy to confiscate the vehicles of drunk drivers.
Last year, 364 people died on the roads during the Songkran holiday.
Thailand's annual road toll is estimated by the World Health Organisation to be about 24,000.
