Bubble plumes link oceans with the atmosphere

Helen Czerski studies the bubbles found in sea water. These bubbles are where gas exchange takes place. It is here that carbon dioxide and other atmospheric gases dissolve in the water. Other gases pass from the water into the atmosphere. Phytoplankton produce sulphur compounds.  In the atmosphere, these compounds are the nuclei around which vapour attaches as water, forming clouds and rain. Helen Czerski stresses that the oceans and the atmosphere are not separate systems, but connected.
