Review finds point-to-point speed cameras should be moved
The ACT Government will relocate point-to-point speed cameras installed in Canberra's south, after a review confirmed earlier warnings to the Government that the location was unsuitable.
The speed cameras on Athllon Drive will be moved, three years after they were switched on.
Road Safety Minister Shane Rattenbury said a government-commissioned review undertaken by Martin Small Consulting had deemed the current location as ineffective.
"The review clearly shows that the current location is not suitable, given the number of intersections and stopping points between the two cameras," he said.
The report's authors noted two roundabouts in the 3.5-kilometre stretch reduced the effectiveness of the cameras.
It has been recommended a fixed mid-block camera would be a better option along the section between Beasley Street and Sulwood Drive.
"We will now undertake a feasibility study on potential sites for the relocated cameras," Mr Rattenbury said.
The review recommended Tuggeranong Parkway and Parkes Way as possible relocation sites for the point-to-point cameras.
"We will also examine whether the point-to-point cameras could be relocated to the new Majura Parkway," Mr Rattenbury said.
The review said the location of Canberra's other point-to-point speed camera on Hindmarsh Drive was suitable.
The territory's red light and other speed cameras were also deemed to be appropriately located.
"Following the recommendations in the review, the Government will ensure all new fixed mid-block cameras are placed on sections of road with a high concentration of crashes," Mr Rattenbury said.
In September 2013 a departmental brief released under Freedom of Information showed the Government was urged not to install the cameras on Athllon Drive or find a new preferred site for a planned "park and ride".
