The importance of identity is underestimated by the general community.

But if you've lost it or been disconnected from it, the search can be painful and distressing.

In the past, record keeping practices in many institutions have been ad hoc, unsophisticated, judgemental and inaccurate.

This has resulted in generations of Australians feeling diminished and insignificant - and missing their heritage.

How should this be addresses and what's being done?
