Meet Australia's worst housemate

Posted
Who is the worst housemate you've lived with?

We think we've found the worst housemate in history.

People who don't pay bills or don't vacuum may be the worst you've experienced in a share house but Rose from the Sunshine Coast was next level.

And she was more than willing to own up to her very, very questionable behaviour.

Rose started off with the least concerning parts of her story.

"I would constantly eat other people's food... from the fridge or the cupboards... I'd steal clothes from their wardrobes even if they'd notice it was their item but I'd say it was mine," she told Hack.

"Often I'd go out drinking quite a lot then come back home and end up spewing in the bathtub and not cleaning it properly because I'd pass out in bed.

"But I'd wake up and the bathtub would be clean."

If you've ever lived in a sharehouse in your early twenties, all of this might sound pretty standard. But then Rose owned up to the worst thing she did in a share house.

"The worst thing I probably did was when we moved house and I put the lease in my name and then I put the electricity my name and gas and everything and everyone transferred me money for everything," she said.

"Then I went away on a holiday and I spent all their money and I didn't return from the holiday... I assume a lot of these people are probably listening, so I'm sorry."

It took a few years for Rose to figure out how bad her behaviour actually was.

"Even when I was doing it I realised it wasn't okay and I'm just embarrassed," she said.

"I was quite young and really broke... If you're close enough to the person.. maybe just speak to them and ask if everything is okay.

"Because on a lower level maybe shit isn't going okay... just be upfront about it, no one was upfront about it with me, and call them out."

We asked for your worst housemate stories

We met Rose after doing a call out for your worst housemate stories.

Here are some of our favourites:

  • "I shared with a 'young professional' who was a little odd but fine until she left poop in the shower."
  • "Moved in with this girl... she invited all these bikies over for a huge party and they were doing drugs in the toilet and wouldn't let me use it."
  • "I lived with a guy who decided he needed a plastic container for his lunch so proceeded to empty out MY freshly made food into the rubbish bin to use MY container for his food."

Dave* perhaps wins the award for living with a person who is the combination of every version of a bad housemate.

He sent us a very lengthy, but entertaining email about his nightmare experience complete with GIFs.

This guy was gross, cheap, and weird.

"The first red flag was his really successful tinder career that was like ludicrously impressive... like three or four girls a week," he told Hack.

"He'd hide cutlery in his room... He'd hide rubbish in his room so the dogs would get in there... He'd hide rubbish in the garden and stuff like that."

Dave says he also damaged their carpet and he sent out this email to try and get him to agree to look after the place.

The housemate packed up and left, never to be heard of ever again, but this is what Dave said in his email to us:

But Dave didn't get a bond off this guy and he wasn't on the lease so he has to go to court to try and get him to pay up.

"We didn't really know what our rights were, you just don't expect people to be so shit I guess is the most plain way I can explain it," he said.

"I probably should have had the foresight to take a bond off him and stuff but maybe a bit more feedback from [the real estate agent] to say you know if you don't know this guy here are a few steps if it goes south... Unless you're told, you don't know any better."
