The story of Scott and Stopes

We are celebrating The Science Show’s 39th birthday. And Ockham’s Razor  turns 30 in two weeks. Its first broadcast was 16th September 1984. This poignant talk, by Elizabeth Truswell was first heard 6th March 2011. It recounts Scott’s ill fated trip to the South Pole in 1912. Sadly, the party was beaten by the Norwegian Amundsen who had arrived a month earlier. All in Scott’s party perished on the return journey, just 11 miles from a supply tent. But curiously, despite having ditched some vital equipment, thirty five pounds of rocks were retained, having been collected from a glacier. The rocks contained valuable fossils demonstrating flora or a past climate, and showing Antarctic’s part of the massive continent, Gondwanaland. Why were they retained? Elizabeth Truswell tells an intriguing tale of Scott’s relationship with Marie Stopes who had asked to join the expedition. When she learned her wishes could not be met, she gave Scott a crash course in paleobotany.
Did this meeting with Marie Scopes influence his decision to cling to the rocks when all seemed lost? Did he know of the rocks scientific significance?
