Contact sports come with a hidden toll, one which few competitors realise they are paying. It is the toll of sustained head trauma, or brain damage. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy can only be fully diagnosed though post-mortem studies, and there is an ongoing discussion on what is the long-term impact of head injuries.
