New Caledonia independence vote

The world may see a new country emerge this weekend depending on the outcome of a referendum on New Caledonian independence.

In 1988, indigenous Kanak independence supporters held French police hostage in a cave the ensuing crackdown ended in the death of 19 Kanaks and two police.

The international outcry led France to finally address the issue it had mishandled for decades and this weekend, the long promised independence referendum is finally happening.
