In an exclusive interview, a mother and son have detailed the abuse they suffered at the hands of a Victorian police officer.

Michelle* was subjected to serious physical, emotional and verbal attacks by her former spouse, who has since been convicted.

She tells Virginia Trioli she was "verbally admonished" for reporting the abuse, and then had her privacy breached on at least two occasions by investigating officers.

"I don't want another family to go through the hell — the years of hell that I and my family had to go through at the hands of Victoria Police," Michelle said.

Family Violence Command Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter says "there is no place for family violence in our community".

"We do not treat any officers found to be committing these horrendous crimes differently," he said. "If anything, we hold our officers more accountable than other members of the community."

Police Minister Lisa Neville has also written to Michelle, apologising for the way her case was handled.

*Names have been changed to protect victims' privacy.
