The history of Mardi Gras in Australia goes back to the 1970's, when on a cold night in 1978 a small group gathered for a protest march.

In 1980, the post-parade party tradition began. That was the beginning of how we know Mardi Gras today -A party in celebration of solidarity of LGBTIQ+ community.

But Mardi Gras in the Kimberley has its own story... starting only 4 years ago, they now host Broome Mardi Gras, which is one of the biggest events in the Kimberley.

This year, the event runs over three days starting tonight with Drag Bingo, followed by a Saturday night cabaret with Queens from interstate, and topped off with Broome's biggest dance party.

The beneficiaries of this year's event is Headspace Broome.

Lucy Falcocchio is one the founders of Broome Pride and Kristen Orazi who is the manager of Headspace Broome.
