Five gr8 uploads from the first week of Unearthed High

Posted
L-R: Jac Marshall, Tomorrow's Forecast, Tynan, Farraday's Cage and Jacob Biermann.

No need to drag out the dodgy telly, the Unearthed High cohort this year are not slacking off.

Our annual search for high school musical talent has kicked off and the uploads have been pouring in from all corners of the country. Already, the triple j team have been dropping stars across the many stellar tracks and we want you to share in the excitement, so we've collated five stellar songs from the last seven days right here!

Farraday's Cage

School: SEDA College & Helena College, WA

For fans of: Arlo Parks, Billie Eilish and/or Kita Alexander

If you're into serene folk with a soulful twist, get around this Perth duo. Farraday Tween brings tender vocals that are super reminiscent of Billie Eilish in Your Power and overachiever Calvin Bennett provides the backing guitar, drums, keys, bass and production.

Their latest, Lost In You, highlights the pair's emotive song writing with a very Sufjan-esque plucked guitar melody hitting you square in the feelz. There's been a solid track record for dynamic duos in Unearthed High history (cc: Teenage Joans, Mosquito Coast and Hockey Dad), so Farraday's Cage are certainly one's to watch.

Jac Marshall

School: Willunga Waldorf School, SA

For fans of: Marlon Williams, Hozier and/or Big Thief

"This eighteen year old has undoubtedly been possessed by the spirit of a porch-sitting, hard-life-living, guitar-wielding musician," wrote Unearthed's Executive Producer Tommy Faith in his very apt review.

Apparently, Blinding Lights is the first song that Jac Marshall has ever written. It's hard to believe, because every pore of the twangy, gothic track points to an artist that's been at it for ages. Lay your ears upon the South Australian's deep, warm vocals and wise-beyond-his-years lyricism and be transported to the darkest corner of an old-timey saloon.

Jacob Biermann

School: JMC Academy, QLD

For fans of: Ruel, Amy Shark and Khalid

Everything about this talented Gold Coast artist exudes class. In his newest offering Red, he nails every note with pitch perfect precision and an R&B silky smoothness (hence the Ruel comparison), without skipping on hearty doses of emotion and personality.

Whilst Jacob Bierman isn't a stranger to the Unearthed High realm (cc: his über impressive 2019 entry, My Kingdom), there's no doubt he's levelled up in the two years since with Home & Hosed's Declan Byrne simply stating "one. to. watch." in his Red review.

Tomorrow's Forecast

School: Palm Beach Currumbin State High, QLD

For fans of: Middle Kids, Angie McMahon and/or Didirri

There's a good reason why we gave this lot a shoutout on our socials last week. Olive, Bonnie and Damo uploaded their golden indie gem Room on my Shelf on day one of the competition and they have a very good reason to be so confident.

Whilst Room on my Shelf spruiks a similar maturity and restraint to the likes of Gang Of Youths, it's underpinned with a youthful energy that's largely carried by the sweet, hopeful vocals. There's no doubt about it, Tomorrow's Forecast is looking extremely bright.

Tynan

School: Cohuna Secondary College, VIC

Sounds like: The Kid Laroi, Juice WRLD and/or Lil Tecca

So, you're a keen rapper and talented vocalist from a country town without a popping hip hop scene? It might be a tough sitch, but for Tynan, it was the driving force to set up a home studio and start collaborating with artists around the world from the comfort of his bedroom.

In the last eight months, the Central Victorian has uploaded a string of singles that show off his production prowess and knack for writing a killer hook. It might be easy to draw comparisons to former finalist The Kid Laroi, but there's no doubt Tynan is bringing something fresh to the melodic hip hop game and that's why he's one to keep an eye on.
