ACT police seize more guns, weapons linked to man found with explosives in Rydges hotel room
By Charlotte GoreThousands of dollars worth of stolen guns, explosives, drugs and cash have been seized by ACT police after a series of raids across three Canberra suburbs.
Key points:
- A man was arrested in a Rydges Canberra hotel room last week with homemade explosives
- In raids linked to the man, ACT Policing seized drugs, guns and more explosives
- The police are yet to lay charges against the man
The raids, conducted last Friday, were linked to a 26-year-old man arrested at the Rydges Canberra hotel on Thursday night.
Police had gone to the hotel after receiving a tip-off that the man — wanted in connection to bail and other offences — was staying there.
In his room police discovered commercial-grade explosives, a homemade gun and ammunition.
Following the man's arrest, ACT Policing executed search warrants on residences in Bonner and Gowrie, as well as a storage facility in Mitchell.
They found two sawn-off guns, a homemade shotgun, a Taser, a bulletproof vest, explosives, about $30,000 worth of drugs, $20,000 worth of stolen tools and $3,000 in cash.
Police said the man had a previous history of car theft, and a vehicle he stole was in the car park of the hotel at the time of his arrest.
Among the collection of items was a weapon engraved with the words: "give them nothing but take from them everything", a quote from the film 300.
Most of the tools recovered have been returned to their owners as their mobile numbers were engraved on them, but all other items are still in police possession.
Police said investigations were ongoing, but charges have yet to be laid against the man.
