Clash of rights over religious freedom

It’s been six weeks since public comments closed in response to the federal government’s proposed religious freedom legislation.

Two draft bills, also called exposure drafts, have attracted thousands of responses – some supportive, some hostile, many just sceptical about the need to protect religious practice in Australia.

Dr Joel Harrison is a senior lecturer in law at the University of Sydney. He is the author of a forthcoming book on liberalism and religious liberty and he’s been studying the draft laws and the public response.
