Crossbench delivers surprise defeat on ensuring integrity legislation

Pauline Hanson and Jacqui Lambie have joined to defeat the Morrison Government's ensuring integrity legislation, commonly known as the union busting bill.

After months of intense negotiations and lobbying, the Federal Government thought it was about to secure the passage of its controversial bill, but the vote tied 34-34 and the bill failed.

The bill set up a three-strike penalty system which would have allowed for a case to be brought in the federal court to deregister a union or union official.

The Government says the bill is needed to deal with criminal conduct in militant unions like the CFMEU, but the Opposition says it's a fundamental attack on organised labour.

Guest:

Brendan O'Connor, Shadow Minister for Employment and Industry
