If you're considering buying an air purifier to reduce the risk of COVID-19, it should be one with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter only, according to an atmospheric chemist.
University of Melbourne Associate Professor Robyn Schofield has penned a guide for purchasing air cleaners and warned buyers to avoid ionisers or plasma technology.
"You are ionising what's in the air, you're splitting up the oxygen or the nitrogen, you're forming nitrogen oxide or ozone... and these are all things which are gases, and we don't want to be breathing them in," she said.
