Heat Waves
Glass Animals
The Hottest song in the strangest year of our lives came from British psych-popsters Glass Animals. The woozy ‘Heat Waves’ is easy on the ear, but it’s a deceptively tragic song. Tapping loss and longing, frontman Dave Bayley wrote a hugely relatable and strangely prophetic earworm that captured the surreal mood of 2020. Read More

The Wrap Up

Wet ‘n Wild

It must be said that this year’s countdown is undeniably m o i s t. Liquids have seeped through every part of the hundred, wetting tracks like ‘Get On The Beers' (#12), ‘Dribble' (#29), 'Wishing Well' (#49), 'Soak Me In Bleach' (#64), 'Lemonade' (#93), 'Rain' (#94) and, of course, 'WAP' (#6). The artists were similarly waterlogged, with Lime Cordiale, Juice WRLD, Ocean Alley, and Stormzy bringing the squelch.

H100 Hogs

Some artists truly could not help themselves this year, dishing out song after song to fans as they would ladles of gruel to hungry, hungry Dickensian orphans. Triple threats like Glass Animals, Tame Impala, Billie Eilish, and Joji have three tracks in the 100. Spacey Jane, Juice WRLD and G Flip all appear four times. And brothers Oli and Louis really were (Leim)bach: Lime Cordiale have bested their four songs in the 2019 countdown with five this year. Together these eight acts made up nearly a third of the countdown.

Sky's NOT the limit

You know where has been supremely unchill lately? Earth. And since bugging out to Mars isn’t a financially viable option yet [CC: elonmusk420@gmail.com], some artists chose to hit the stratosphere through the magic of song. #81 was 'Weightless', while #58 was trying to ‘Fly Away’ to get 'Under The Thunder' (#27). They were joined by Spacey Jane, Stace Cadet, Bring Me The Horizon and Alex the Astronaut who are simply never not on the up, up, UP.

What even is Time?

If you found yourself 'Lost In Yesterday' (#5) in 2020, with 'No Plans To Make Plans' (#26) you weren’t alone. Maybe you were ‘Fantasising’ (#66) about ‘my future’(#79), or happened to 'forget me too' (#36) for a 'Day & Age' (#63). All we can do now is ‘Laugh Now Cry Later' (#86) because ‘These Days’ (#92) are ‘No Time To Die' (#90). Did any of that really make sense? No. But did last year? Also, no.
